Um artigo publicado no South African Journal of Science afirma que cachimbos encontrados no jardim de Shakespeare, em Stratford-Upon-Avon, na Inglaterra, apresentaram evidências de cannabis e nicotina.

Em 24 fragmentos estudados, oito deles indicaram a presença de cannabis, afirma o artigo escrito por Francis Thackeray.
Porém, apesar de os cachimbos terem sido descobertos na propriedade de Shakespeare, não há nenhuma evidência de que eles pertenciam ao autor.
Segundo Trackeray, em entrevista à CNN, o Soneto 76 de Shakespeare “…é provavelmente uma referência secreta a maconha”.
